General Doubts

How does homoeopathy work?

It works by stimulating the body’s own healing power. This stimulus assists your system in clearing itself of any expressions of imbalance.  The homoeopath gives you a medicine or remedy which matches your symptoms as you experience them, and which takes into account you as a person – your individual characteristics emotionally as well as physically.

Why does homoeopathy take a long time ?

It is a myth that homoeopathy is slow acting. Most of the times what happens is the patient comes to us with long history of chronic illness. Therefore the treatment takes time. Homoeopathy is in fact fast acting in acute conditions such as fever, diarrhoea, vomiting, etc.

How long does treatment take?

This depends on the illness as well as the other individual characteristics of your case. In general, a slowly developing or long-standing complaint takes longer to cure than an acute one. Remember that homoeopathy aims to cure both the cause of you illness as well as its symptoms, so be patient.

Can you guarantee me a cure?

No we cannot. It is impossible and unethical to assure any patient of cure no matter how much success we have seen in the past. This is true for all forms of therapy.

Can homeopathy cure ‘this’ disease? Can homeopathy cure ‘that’?

Homeopathy is a complete science. It is capable of handling almost all clinical entities. A large number of conditions thought to be ‘incurable’, ‘terminal’ and ‘irreversible’ under conventional medicine are frequently ‘cured’ in Homeopathy. However, each system of medicine has its limitations. It is not our contention that we cure everything

Can homoeopathy and other system of medicine(Ayurveda/Allopathy) be taken together?

We do not advocate the use of Ayurveda and homoeopathy together because both are holistic medicine. Therefore, if you take two together, we don’t know how to evaluate your progress. We will not come to know with which system you are better. Same with the case of allopathy. Also these conventional medicines change the symptoms to such an extent that their original presentation of the symptom is lost, making it difficult to gather enough accurate information to prescribe the correct homoeopathic remedy. The symptoms are the compass that a homoeopath uses to find his way to the right remedy. If you were to take conventional medication to treat symptoms after beginning homoeopathic treatment, you could stop the action of the remedy, rendering it ineffective. Most of the acute conditions are handled well with homoeopathy but in some exceptional conditions, we do advice the patient to take allopathic treatment

Homoeopathy is only useful in chronic cases

Very often it is – where everything else has failed! But the true reason for this perception is because people turn to homoeopathy so late when everything else has failed! After years of allopathic treatment often an illness becomes chronic. The treatment will now naturally take longer than in case of using homoeopathy right from the beginning

Homoeopathy is slow acting and cannot be used in acute cases of diarrheoa, fever, cough, cold, etc.

Fact: Homoeopathy is fast acting in acute cases and can be effectively used in treating infections, fever, cold etc. Unfortunately, people tend to go to a homoeopath only when the acute problem becomes chronic. Naturally, these cases take longer to treat. Also, most people take recourse in homoeopathy in cases of arthritis, allergic asthma or skin conditions etc., which take a longer time to treat with any other system of medicines.

The patient is under parenteral nutrition or is unable to take any solid or liquid food through the mouth. How do I administer the medicines to this patient?

Few physicians restrict the intake of onion, garlic, tea, coffee etc. along with homoeopathic medicine. But the researches have shown that there is no effect of such things on the efficacy of the medicine if these are taken in moderation & a significant gap is maintained between them & the medicine. Homoeopathic medicines act well on patients habituated to coffee and betel. Take the example of the southern states, where people primarily drink coffee, but Homoeopathy is most popular and is working very well in these states. But with certain medicines such restrictions are a must otherwise their action gets antidote

Homoeopathy is only good for children

It’s not that Homoeopathy is good for children only, it is just that children love to take homoeopathic medicines due to their sweet taste. It is good for children in the way that if we give homoeopathic treatment to our children from the very beginning it would give rise to a healthy generation because homoeopathic medicines not only remove the disease from its root but they also increase the resistance power of the body and they prevent the progression of disease or prevent the disease from becoming chronic. But homoeopathy is equally effective in adults too.

All homoeopathic medicines are same

It appears that all homoeopathic medicines are same because they are dispensed in globules. Actually in all preparations the vehicle remains the same but it is medicated by different homoeopathic dilutions. Depending on the illness, homoeopaths medicate with different medicines. The sugar pills serve only as a vehicle for transfer of the medicine. The selected medicine, out of a range of more than 1200 different dilutions, is targeted to the individual problems.

Homoeopathic doctors are quacks who do not have formal training in the field of medicine.

Qualified doctors practice Homoeopathy, in most parts of the world. In India, there are over 180 medical colleges, which offer degree and post-graduate studies in Homoeopathy. At present, there are over 1,50,000 trained homoeopaths in the country.

Myth15 .Homoeopathy is a self-read science

Homoeopathy is a scientific system and is not something, which can be learnt from books. For graduating as a homoeopath one has to complete a 5Ѕ-year degree course in Homoeopathy including one year of internship. During the course the students are taught, subjects related to Homoeopathy as well as Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Jurisprudence, Surgery, Medicine, Gynaecology and Obstetrics. Practising Homoeopathy without a recognized degree is a punishable offence under the law. Many colleges in India also offer postgraduation in Homoeopathy, M.D. (Hom), in various disciplines

Can homoeopathy aggravate your problems ?

Rarely after the homoeopathic treatment is given there can be increase in your complaints. There can be two reasons for this. First and the more common reason can be the stopping of pain killers or ointment applications which may have kept your symptoms suppressed for a long time and due to removal of that factor, the complaints will be experienced in its actual intensity. In that case, homoeopathic medicine will gradually bring the whole thing under control.
Another possibility is that after the homoeopathic treatment there is slight and short worsening followed by rapid relief. This initial worsening is often the reaction of our body before the cure occurs and is a very good sign.
Another reaction that may be noticed during the course of homoeopathic treatment is that your original problems will get better gradually and then some new symptoms may appear. These new problems may indicate that we need to change your medicine and give you something that will cover this new picture and thereby help you in achieving a holistic cure.

Is homeopathy merely psychological?

If you think you must “believe in” homeopathy for it to work, you need to know that it is not a placebo effect. Here are some powerful examples:
Infants: Homeopathic remedies and treatments are successfully used by parents for common infant ailments such as colic, teething pain and some infections.
Animals: There are many veterinarians using homeopathic medicines to treat domestic pets such as cats, dogs and birds, as well as barnyard animals like goats, horses and cows. Is it possible to have a placebo effect with animals?
Millions of people across the world use and rely on homeopathic remedies. Today there are a rapidly growing number of conventional medical doctors using homeopathic medicines, including:
39% of French family physicians
20% of German physicians
10% of Italian physicians Moreover, in many European countries there is a growing trend of medical doctors referring patients to homeopathic physicians.

Does Homoeopathy avoids surgery ?

Surgery is advised in conditions where medicines have limited or no role and an operation can cure or improve the condition. There are various diseases which are tagged as surgical, where homoeopathy works curatively and can help avoid surgery. Some such ailments where Homoeopathy can help are: Tonsillitis, Piles, Fissure, Fistula, Appendicitis, Chronic ear discharge, vocal cord nodules, Polyp in nose / ear, Kidney stones, Uterine fibroids (small size ),Ovarian cysts, Warts, Corns etc.,

What are the limitations of homeopathy?

Homeopathy is generally not recommended in cases where risk to life or the condition of the patient exists. Though you may take these medicines concomitantly with conventional medicines, you should avoid taking them at the cost of stopping essential life saving remedies. You should always consult your primary care physician before altering your treatment regimen

Have recently changed my Homeopath. Will he prescribe the same remedy for my condition as my previous Homeopath did?

Not necessarily. Prescriptions in homeopathy are based on the peculiar signs and symptoms the patient suffers from. Your medical condition may be the same; however your symptoms could have changed over time, or more importantly perceived differently by the new physician. Besides, even if the same remedy is indicated your homeopath has the option of prescribing it in a different strength or potency

Are individuals with the same medical condition prescribed the same homeopathic remedy?

Not necessarily. Two individuals having the same medical diagnosis may not necessarily have same or similar signs and symptoms. For e.g. two individuals may have the same medical diagnoses of pharangitis (sore throat). However, if one has a sensation of burning in the throat and the other has a sensation of rawness, different remedies may be indicated. Therefore Homeopathy is definitely individualistic.

Are Homeopaths trained to diagnose medical conditions?

Homeopaths in India having the degree LCEH or BHMS or MD undergo practically the same medical training as an MD would do in the US does. Their course includes 4 1/2 years of academic studies and 1 year of hospital internship. They are not only qualified Homeopaths; they may also be classified as General Family Physicians. The major difference is that the Pharmacology is purely Homeopathic. However, they are well acquainted with commonly prescribed allopathic medicines, the knowledge of which is essential, as it helps in differentiating peculiar symptoms from medicinal side-effects. Homeopathic curriculum other than that in India varies significantly. In the United States majority of the states require a physician to be an MD, only after which can he / she practice Homeopathy. A degree such as ND (Naturopathic Doctor) recognized in certain states in the USA, qualifies an individual to practice this science. Always clarify your doubts with the physician before initiating treatment.
